NORTHGATE HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ BANDS

These two outstanding jazz bands from Walnut Creek are directed by Greg Brown, CMEA Outstanding Jazz Educator Award Winner 2013–2014. Tonight’s featured guests are percussionist/vocalist Edgardo Cambón and composer/arranger/trombonist Francisco Torres.

Jazz Band I, winner of Next Generation Jazz Festival in Monterey in 2014 and 2015—and finalist for the past 7 years—will perform once again at the Monterey Jazz Festival this fall. This advanced group is also CAJ State Champion HS Jazz Band 2014, Folsom Jazz Festival’s HS Jazz Band Sweepstakes Winner 2015, and top-scoring band at CSM Jazz Festival, San Ramon Valley Jazz Festival, and Santa Cruz Jazz Festival.

Jazz Band II enables additional students to perform and develop soloing skills in a rigorous jazz environment. This group has earned many honors and awards at several jazz festivals and competitions. It has also performed in community events with the Big Band of Rossmoor and at the Mt. Diablo Music Education Foundation’s Music Festival.

Accolades for both bands include student awards for outstanding soloists/musicianship, scholarships, and placements in district, county, state, and national honor bands.

Northgate has performed at Yoshi’s in each of the past 11 years and is once again excited to share an evening of jazz with you!
