"Life Is a Dream": Cal Shakes' Outdoor Production of "The Spanish Hamlet"

California Shakespeare stages an exciting new version of Pedro Calderón's Spanish Golden Age classic under the stars at the beautiful Bruns Amphitheater, translated and adapted by Pulitzer Prize-winner Nilo Cruz ("Anna in the Tropics".) An acclaimed Cuban playwright, Cruz injects a sense of urgency to this famous metaphysical exploration of free will and fate. The story follows Prince Segismundo, whose father has locked him in a tower to disprove a prophecy that his son will turn into an evil tyrant. When the prince is finally released, though, the prediction seems to come true. Or is everything that happens just part of a dreamlike fantasy? Enjoy the play that's become known as "The Spanish Hamlet," with a picnic spread or your own, or one purchased at the event.
